Your Legacy, Trinity Hall’s future

Securing a Trinity Hall education for future generations lies at the heart of all that we do, and so this year we have launched our Anniversary Fundraising Campaign. By supporting our Campaign you will ensure the future of learning and research at the College remains strong and will enable us to provide a pathway to success and excellence for future generations.

Don’t just leave a Legacy – start one

By pledging a gift to Trinity Hall in your Will you can help ensure that future generations continue to have access to the life-changing power of a Cambridge education. Your gift will ensure that the College you know today and the values that you believe in, continue into the future.

Why gifts in Wills matter

Your gift can:

  • Provide postgraduate studentships for Masters and PhD study, so that a brilliant young person can take up their place at Trinity Hall and carry out their research.
  • Provide support for undergraduates with bursaries, academic resources and College-based programmes to support mental health and wellbeing.
  • Support teaching excellence and the supervision system.
  • Support our Widening Participation programmes, helping to remove barriers and encourage applications to Trinity Hall from talented students from all backgrounds.
  • Support our College Masterplan and sustainability ambitions, preserving our outstanding built heritage along with providing new facilities.
  • Support clubs and societies ensuring Trinity Hall is a place where not only academic endeavour but also music, sport and drama thrive.

Your Legacy, their story

Gifts in Wills have helped make a real difference to the College and to generations of students. Here are some examples of recent gifts.

It’s easier than you might think

Leaving a gift in your Will is simple. Other than the cost of preparing your Will, there is no financial obligation to you during your lifetime and, depending on the size of your estate, there may be considerable tax advantages.

A gift to charity is free from inheritance tax (IHT). IHT is charged at 40% on any estate worth more than £325,000, but if you leave 10% or more of your net estate to charity, you will benefit from a lower inheritance tax rate of 36%.

You can choose to leave:

  • A specific cash amount (a pecuniary legacy)
  • A percentage of your estate
  • What is left after taking care of family and friends (a residuary gift)
  • If you are the beneficiary of a Will yourself, you may also be able to reduce the amount of inheritance tax you will pay by a Deed of Variation.

Suggested wording:

“I/We give free of tax to the Master and Fellows of Trinity Hall, Cambridge CB2 1TJ (Registered Charity Number 1137458) the residue/a proportion of the residue of my estate/the sum of £(amount) to be used as they think fit and declare that the receipt of the Bursar or other proper officer for the time being of the College shall be sufficient discharge to my/our Executors.”

If you would like to amend an existing Will to include Trinity Hall, there is no need to re-write it. You can simply add a codicil.

To give you peace of mind, we always recommend speaking with a solicitor and/or accountant to help you prepare your Will.

Make a life-changing decision today

“I gained so much from my time at the Hall. I would not be in the position I am today if I had not been part of such a special community. I think it important to give back to the College so others can benefit in a similar way to me.”

James Thomas (Theology & Religious Studies, 2002), JCR President 2004-5

“I would not have had such an interesting career let alone having my portrait hanging in the Hall of a Cambridge college, without the generous public support available to undergraduates in the 1960s. By the time I was Senior Tutor in the 1990s, things were much tougher. I was especially concerned for those really worried about incurring debt and living so frugally that they were in danger of missing out on student life. I was truly grateful for the kindness of former students which made it possible to help.”

Sandra Raban (Fellow in History 1976-2002 and co- Patron of the 1350 Society)

“It is now time to return something of the benefit I received to the Hall so that others may participate in the same good fortune. To me, it is the most deserving of causes.”

Clive Thorne (Law, 1971)

Recognising your generous support

The 1350 Society has been created to thank, during your lifetime, all who have remembered Trinity Hall in their Will. We are delighted to have appointed as co-Patrons, Sandra Raban (Emeritus Fellow in History and former Admissions Tutor and Senior Tutor) and Peter Lawrence (MML, 1982).

As a member, you will receive:

  • an invitation to an annual special event

  • be thanked in the Donor List every year (unless you wish to remain anonymous)
  • special reports and updates.

We now have almost 240 members and, as part of our 675th Anniversary Campaign, hope to grow our numbers further. Generosity at this level is truly transformational and will ensure we are able to offer the benefits of a Trinity Hall education for future generations, regardless of means or financial circumstances.

Those residing in the United States who wish to make a benefaction to the College may do so by contacting Cambridge in America (CAm). An outright bequest to CAm is not subject to federal or state estate or inheritance taxes, and the value of your bequest is deductible in determining the value of the estate for tax purposes.

Please visit the Cambridge in America Planned Giving website to find out more about US estate planning, or alternatively contact CAm’s  Planned Giving specialist, David Stiles, at plannedgiving@cantab.org or by phone (212) 201-0781.
