The Impact of Legacy Giving 2023-2024
Along with lifetime giving, gifts pledged to the College in wills have a transformational impact, whether for unrestricted use or designated for a specific purpose. For many of us, a gift in our Will is the largest donation to charity we will ever make, and last year the College received just over £1million in total. For far sighted donors who chose to support the College in this meaningful way it brings the satisfaction of knowing that the cause you believe in now continues long into the future.
Legacy gifts received last year include:
- Nine gifts ranging from £1k to £100k that were used to help fund the first phase of the College Masterplan project – to retrofit and refurbish O staircase and trail sustainability initiatives to help reduce our carbon footprint.
- £10k received for the Milestones Fund which helps fund the Cambridge Bursary for Trinity Hall students from low-income backgrounds.
- £20k received for the Benn Bursaries Fund which provides additional financial support for student hardship, awarded at the discretion of the College.
Building on funds received in previous years, last year we received £683k from the legacy of Peter (Mechanical Sciences, 1943) and Margaret Bell. Their wonderful gifts have allowed the College to endow in perpetuity an Early Career Fellowship at Trinity Hall. This Fellowship has been established to allow the College to offer outstanding young academics a start on the academic ladder, while enabling the College the flexibility to fulfil its teaching needs over time. Now named the Bell (Early Career) Fellowship the post is for a fixed-term of 4 years, and allows the post holder to pursue research in their chosen subject, while fulfilling teaching commitments in College and directing studies as needed.
The first post holder is Dr Grigalius Taujanskas, (himself an undergraduate of Trinity Hall, Mathematics 2011) College Assistant Professor and Director of Studies in Mathematics.
Dr Grigalius Taujanskas
“The Bell Fellowship has been a fantastic opportunity to participate in the teaching and development of Trinity Hall’s undergraduates, all the way from their first supervisions in Cambridge to their graduation. It has provided scope for a variety of interactions between myself and the students, including being able to provide support and advice on their future career choices. The Fellowship has also allowed me to continue, indeed accelerate, my research programme, for which I am grateful.”
Whether it is access to our buildings, improvements to our facilities, or through receiving a College Bursary or travel award, every Trinity Hall Member has benefited from the generosity of previous generations. By pledging a legacy gift, not only are you continuing this proud tradition but also helping us to secure our future.
Thank you for your support.
