Impact of Giving 2023-24
Philanthropic gifts from Trinity Hall alumni and supporters allow us to fulfil our education and research mission, not only today but into the future. We thank you most sincerely for your support.
Last academic year, our community of over 1,300 donors contributed £2,767,776 to a variety of College funds and projects.
Gifts to the Area of Greatest Need provide the backbone of support to the College, last year raising over £932k from 856 donors. We are immensely grateful that so many of our donors trust us to give wherever the need is greatest. This year, we are renaming this fund ‘THink Ahead’ to highlight the importance of your gift as an investment in the future of Trinity Hall and our students.
Last year, you donated a total of £782,590 in financial support for students. Your donations enable us to offer financial assistance to undergraduates through the Cambridge Bursary and Enhanced Cambridge Bursary schemes. Surveys have shown that these bursaries relieve financial pressures; enabling students to focus on their studies, gain the most from their College experience and become successful graduates.
In recognition of the specific financial difficulties of Clinical Medics and Vets, this year the Collegiate University has opened up access to the Enhanced Cambridge Bursary. Previously it could only be awarded during their first four years of study. As a result of this change, an additional five Trinity Hall students will benefit directly from the generosity of our donors.
675th Anniversary Campaign
As we look ahead to our 675th Anniversary Campaign support for our postgraduate community is a top fundraising priority. Our aim is to significantly increase the funds available to help with both fees and maintenance, ensuring Trinity Hall can attract the highest calibre of students regardless of financial background. We are committed to the principle that no student should be deterred from studying because of financial barriers. Last year you donated £500k to help us provide postgraduate studentships. In addition, over £54k was raised for the Christopher Padfield Fund, our newly created fund for postgraduates. This will help postgraduates over the next academic year to undertake travel for their research and to ensure they don’t miss the opportunity to present at academic conferences.
Helping applicants from all backgrounds believe they can come to Trinity Hall, and thrive here, underpins all our widening participation activity. Last year, donations of £11k helped the Admissions team’s events both in College and in our link area. Our innovative access programme ‘You’ll Fit In’ aims to increase applications to Trinity Hall from under-represented ethnic groups. We rely on donations from alumni and other supporters to ensure the success of this programme continues.
The Jerwood Library and Old Library
Donations to the Library enable the College to purchase additional copies of the most popular textbooks and extra academic equipment to help students with their studies. The Jerwood Library aims to provide key texts for Part I undergraduate courses as well as some books for Part II and taught postgraduate courses. Last year £2,400 was donated, helping to ensure that texts remain accessible for everyone.
The Old Library is one of the treasures of Trinity Hall. £5k was donated for the conservation of manuscripts and for digitising the collection to ensure it is preserved for future generations and to make it accessible to a wider audience.
Sport, Music and Drama
Playing sport, participating in music, or performing drama are all part of the College experience, and it is our intention that Trinity Hall is a place where our students belong to a community that supports their wellbeing and resilience. Last year £27,800 was donated to College Music and Clubs & Societies, helping to ensure all students who wish to participate can do so.
Donations support the Trinity Hall Women in Sport Grant, awarded each year to ensure that personal circumstance is not a barrier for women to compete in sport and physical activity.
A first-year Architecture & Design student said:
“I am writing to thank you for the Women in Sport Bursary. I am a first-year who has just started gymnastics as a way of staying fit, meeting new people and learning a new skill. Next week I am going to be competing in Cuppers, in a friendly beginner’s competition. There is an amazing community within the Cambridge gymnastics club, and I thank you for your help.”
Thank you for your generosity.
