Named character and half-day on the set of TV series Grantchester with author James Runcie
How about having a named character in the coming season of the hit international television series Grantchester? And what if, on top of that, you could spend half a day on set with a companion and author James Runcie whilst they film it this autumn?
The series is set in the 1950’s and stars Robson Green and Rishi Nair – having in previous seasons had James Norton and Tom Brittney as part of its cast. It is inspired by The Grantchester Mysteries, a series of seven crime fiction adventures written by Trinity Hall alumnus James Runcie (English, 1978). His father’s early experience as a rural vicar served as inspiration for the story.
Reserve amount: £2,000
Further details
- The named character, which will be chosen by the winning bidder, will have to be agreed directly with Runcie.
- The 2-person visit to the set, which will take place in September or October 2025, will have to be agreed directly with Runcie.
- The winner bidder does not need to be one of the 2 people visiting the set.
- Filming takes place in Hertfordshire, Cambridge and London; the two people visiting the set are responsible for the expenses and planning of getting there and back.
About James Runcie
Runcie is the author of twelve novels, four plays and a memoir. He is also an award-winning documentary filmmaker, playwright and literary curator. He has been Artistic Director of the Bath Literature Festival, Head of Literature and Spoken Word at the Southbank Centre, London, and Commissioning Editor for Arts on BBC Radio 4. He is a Fellow of the Royal Society of Literature and a member of both the Crime Writer’s Association and The Detection Club. He is currently writing a new crime series set in the Renaissance and a non-fiction book about cricket.

Lot 2
Tour of his studio followed by refreshments with Edmund de Waal
A unique opportunity is being offered for a group of five people to join acclaimed contemporary artist, potter and author Edmund de Waal in his South London studio for a personal guided tour. De Waal is a Trinity Hall alumnus; he read English in 1983 and became an Honorary Fellow in 2009.
He generously donated one of his pieces to Trinity Hall in 2019. The ceramic and steel work titled Lacrimae rerum, which is in Jerwood Library’s reading room, references the loss of libraries and memoralises the relationship of his father and grandfather. The College also owns another piece of his, Tenebrae, which is on display in the Master’s Lodge.
Reserve amount: £2,000
Further details
- The tour, which will be followed by refreshments, will take around 90 minutes.
- The event will take place during 2026. The date will be set between the winning bidder and de Waal’s team once the auction is finalised.
- The visiting group is responsible for the expenses and planning of getting to de Waal’s studio and back.
About Edmund de Waal
De Waal is an artist who writes. Much of his work is about the contingency of memory: bringing particular histories of loss and exile into renewed life. He continually investigates themes of diaspora, memorial and materiality with his interventions and artworks made for diverse spaces and museums worldwide. De Waal is also renowned for his bestselling family memoir, The Hare with Amber Eyes (2010), which has been translated into nearly 30 languages and has received many literary prizes. He was awarded the Windham-Campbell Prize for non-fiction by Yale University in 2015. In 2021 he was made a Fellow of the Royal Society of Literature and awarded a CBE for his services to art. In 2023 he received the Isamu Noguchi Award. In 2024 he was awarded the Chevalier de l’Ordre des Arts et des Lettres.
