Masterplan and Sustainability

We will become a more sustainable College that provides exceptional spaces in which to live and study.

Our Masterplan and Sustainability review celebrates the physical and experiential identity of Trinity Hall: it recognises the intimate scale, diverse architecture, and characterful gardens that combine to make Trinity Hall “the prettiest corner of the world” according to Henry James and many others.

We are determined to maintain the magic of an inter-disciplinary and inter-generational community. The future of learning at Trinity Hall and our commitment to freedom of speech and academic thought means discovering about others and remaining receptive to different ideas and views. Our building plans will enable us to offer collaborative spaces which encourage people of different expertise, experience, and subjects to come together. Trinity Hall has beautiful sites, but we need also to provide the necessary up-to-date facilities alongside the historic buildings to enable our community to thrive.

It is important to protect the architectural integrity of the much-loved buildings that give Trinity Hall its unique character. We also strive to maintain our focus as a forward-looking College with academic and research excellence at its core, with a built environment that not only enhances academic study but is able to do so within ambitious sustainability goals. The Masterplan recommends a schedule of enhancements over a period of 15 years and new buildings, that will significantly improve both the environmental performance of the College and the quality of our spaces for learning, support, and accommodation.

Having that space where you can foster community, I think is so important, and having more spaces like that would be amazing.

Our Aims

  • Redevelop the area of Cherry Tree Court on the North side of Central Site.
  • Improve the social spaces and sports facilities at Wychfield.
  • Reduce the College’s carbon footprint across estate by up to 70% through fabric improvements, retrofit and energy centres at central site and Wychfield
  • Raise £550,000 to create the role of a sustainability Fellow.

Cherry Tree Court

We propose to rework the area of Cherry Tree Court on the North side of Central Site to upgrade our kitchens and provide a new all-day café available to the whole College community and suitable for social and group study. The site will also provide a multi-functional studio and performance space for productions, lectures and screenings and an enhanced supervision space and seminar area.

Wychfield

Opportunities also exist to improve social cohesion at Wychfield by providing a modern pavilion building with better exercise facilities as well as a club house/common room area.

Sustainability

The College has an important role to play in tackling the climate crisis not only through research but also through practical steps. Our sustainability plan envisages deployment of a variety of renewable energy sources, including ground, air, and water source heat pumps, as well as solar photovoltaics. It also provides for essential and appropriate fabric improvements and retrofit technology across our sites. By undertaking the various measures to maximise our use of renewable energy sources and improve the fabric of our buildings we can cut our carbon emissions by up to 70%.

Sustainability Fellow

Alongside our vision of Trinity Hall becoming a more sustainable built environment we aspire to pioneer research for a sustainable future for the world. Through the establishment of a Fellowship in sustainability we aim to contribute to the important research work being carried out in Cambridge and beyond to help solve global climate change and other challenges faced by humanity.

You can make a difference
